Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has voiced immense confidence in new signing Caleb Yirenkyi after the Ghanaian midfielder delivered an eye-catching performance on his unofficial debut.
The 20-year-old Ghana international completed a landmark £26 million (€27m up front, rising to €30m) move from Danish side FC Nordsjælland, becoming the most expensive transfer in Scandinavian football history and breaking Coventry’s transfer record for the third time this summer ahead of their Premier League return.
Yirenkyi made an immediate impression during Coventry’s 2-0 preseason friendly victory against AS Monaco, displaying tireless coverage, crucial interceptions, and setting up Loum Tchaouna for the Sky Blues’ second goal.
Speaking after the final tune-up match, Lampard revealed that securing the highly sought-after midfielder required pitching a compelling long-term vision against stiff competition from clubs across Europe.
“We’ve got a belief in Caleb here. He’s a player that we’re happy to have brought to the club because he was well wanted by many clubs probably around Europe. We sold the project to him.
“He’s a good, talented player; he’s young. This boy, we believe, is going to really build his career so [he’s] a big addition to the club. I think we saw signs of that; hopefully we see a lot more.”
A graduate of the Right to Dream Academy in Ghana, Yirenkyi previously earned Young Player of the Year honors in Denmark before committing his long-term future to Coventry through 2031.
