Former France international Patrick Vieira has been confirmed as the new head coach of the Senegal national team, with the Frenchman set to take charge of the Teranga Lions with immediate effect.
Vieira, a World Cup winner with France and former manager of clubs including Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Strasbourg, has agreed to lead Senegal’s national team project as the country looks to build a new chapter under his leadership.
The appointment represents a major move for Senegal, who have established themselves as one of Africa’s leading football nations in recent years.
Vieira is expected to bring his considerable experience from European football to a squad featuring several established stars playing at the highest level.
The 50-year-old former midfielder enjoyed a distinguished playing career, winning major honours with Arsenal and Inter Milan, while also playing a key role in France’s successful generation that won the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2000.
His transition into coaching has seen him manage in both England and France. Vieira began his managerial career with Manchester City’s youth setup before taking charge of New York City FC.
He later managed Nice in France, Crystal Palace in the Premier League and Strasbourg.
His immediate task with Senegal will be to organise the national team, maintain its competitive status in Africa and prepare the squad for upcoming international assignments.
Vieira will inherit a talented group of players and will be expected to maximise the quality available to him while introducing his own tactical philosophy.
The Senegalese Football Federation will hope the appointment can usher in a successful period for the Teranga Lions, with Vieira’s international experience and coaching background seen as important assets for the project.
