Liverpool have been handed a fresh boost in their pursuit of Paris Saint Germain winger Ibrahim Mbaye after the highly rated Senegalese attacker was left out of the squad against Ligue 1 side Rennes.
Mbaye, 18, has emerged as an increasingly attractive target for Liverpool as manager Andoni Iraola looks to add another dynamic attacking option to his squad. The teenager’s omission from PSG’s squad has further fuelled speculation that his future in Paris could be coming to an end.
The decision is particularly significant because Mbaye was present in PSG training on Saturday and was not reported to be carrying an injury. His absence therefore appears to be linked to the uncertainty surrounding his future rather than his fitness.
Liverpool have been monitoring the Senegal international as they assess alternatives in their search for another wide attacker. The Reds have also been pursuing Mbaye’s PSG teammate Bradley Barcola, but negotiations for the Frenchman have proved considerably more complicated.
Mbaye, meanwhile, is regarded as a promising young talent with considerable potential. He joined the PSG academy at the age of 10 and progressed through the club’s youth system before making his first team debut at just 16. He subsequently became the youngest player to start a Ligue 1 match for the club at the time.
The teenager has also gained valuable experience at senior level, including appearances in major European and international competitions, despite his age. His pace, direct running and ability to operate in wide attacking positions have made him an appealing option for clubs looking to invest in young attacking talent.
Reports suggest PSG could demand a significant fee for Mbaye, with figures of around €50 million being mentioned. Liverpool are understood to be weighing up whether to make a firm move, while Bayer Leverkusen have also been linked with the youngster.
The latest development could nevertheless strengthen Liverpool’s position. With Mbaye once again omitted from a PSG matchday squad, questions are growing over whether Luis Enrique still sees the teenager as part of his immediate plans.
For Liverpool, Mbaye represents more than simply an alternative to Barcola. The Senegalese youngster is viewed as a long term investment who could develop into a major attacking asset at Anfield.
With the transfer window approaching its final stages, Mbaye’s continued absence from the PSG squad will only intensify speculation that a move to the Premier League could be on the horizon.
