The Nigeria National League, NNL, is set for a major structural change beginning from the 2027/2028 football season, with the league adopting a new format that will see participating clubs divided into two conferences.
Under the proposed arrangement, each conference will consist of 16 clubs, bringing a new competitive structure to Nigeria’s second-tier professional football league.
The new format is expected to provide a more streamlined competition and create a fresh framework for clubs battling for promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, as well as those seeking to maintain their status in the NNL.
However, the current format will remain unchanged for the ongoing season.
The league will continue with four conferences, with Conferences A and B comprising nine clubs each, while Conferences C and D will have eight clubs apiece.
The decision means clubs and stakeholders will have time to fully adjust to the new system before its official implementation in the 2027/2028 season.
The planned transition represents another significant development in the organisation of Nigerian domestic football, as the NNL continues efforts to improve competition, administration and the overall structure of the league.
With the current four-conference format still in operation this season, attention will remain firmly on the battle for promotion and survival, while clubs also begin to look ahead to the major changes expected in the 2027/2028 campaign.
