Stellenbosch FC held to goalless draw by Durban City

Stellenbosch FC earned a point on the road after being held to a goalless draw by Durban City at Chatsworth Stadium.

Returning to Durban for the third time in five matches this season, Stellenbosch FC faced Durban City in a much-anticipated Betway Premiership encounter.

The history books showed that the two previous meetings between the sides both ended in a goalless draw and served as an accurate predictor of things to come, although it was not a match without entertainment.

Stellenbosch’s first chance of note came in the 16th minute when Kgaogelo Ramushu, making his first start for the Club, made a good run down the left and squared the ball for Sinoxolo Kwayiba whose subsequent shot was blocked en route to goal with the ‘keeper beaten.

The hosts responded well, and, after a period of controlled possession, came close to open the scoring themselves, only to be denied by an excellent goalline clearance from debutant Given Msimango.

City’s Gaston Sirino then took aim with two efforts from range in quick succession but both narrowlt missed their mark, leaving the two sides to head into the dressing with the scorecard unchanged.

In the second stanza, Msimago was once again called upon to make a significant defensive contribution when he made a last-gasp block to deny substitute Tashreeq Morris from breaking the deadlock.

Not satisfied to settle with for a point, Stellies pushed forward at the other end almost struck a late winner through the ever-threatening Kwayiba, whose curling effort forced a diving save out of City ‘keeper Fredrick Asare.

There was ultimately no separating the two sides after 90 minutes though, as Stellenbosch FC and Durban City played out a third consecutive goalless draw.
