Kenya men’s volleyball team, Wafalme Stars on Sunday jetted out of the country aboard Air Qatar for the 2026 CAVB Men’s African Nations Volleyball Championship set for September 13-26 in Tunis, Tunisia.
The side coached Gideon Tarus flew out of the County at 1am and they are expected to touch down in Tunis at 3pm in time for the championship which is expected to start on Tuesday.
The team was flagged off on Saturday by Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Secretary Administration Josphine Ouko on behalf of Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya and Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi at the Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club.
Ouko was flanked by Kenya Volleyball Federation president Charles Nyaberi and deputy treasurer and head of delegation to Tunisia Moses Mbuthia.
The team was hosted to a sumptuous dinner at the hotel courtesy of Chief Executive Officer Francis Mihuki. Technical meeting for the championship will be conducted on Monday.
The event has attracted 14 nations across Africa including defending champions Egypt, hosts Tunisia, Rwanda, Chad, Ghana, Nigeria, Algeria, Cameroon, Gambia, Zimbabwe, Morocco, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central Africa Republic and Kenya.
The top three nations at the completion of the event will book tickets to next year’s FIVB World Cup in Poland while the sole winners will book a ticket to 2028 Los Angels Olympic Games.
Kenya has finished ninth in the previous two championship in 2021 and 2023. Coach Tarus said they will be seeking to finish at the podium, saying it will be a good send off.
