Real Madrid travel to Elche on Tuesday for Matchday 5 of La Liga, looking to maintain pressure on Barcelona in the title race. After a convincing 4-1 win over Rayo Vallecano last weekend, Los Blancos want another strong performance, while Yan Diomandé will hope to make a greater impact.
The Ivorian forward, who joined Real Madrid for €140 million, has started only once since his arrival and struggled to convince during the victory over Rayo.
José Mourinho was asked about Diomandé’s situation and pointed to the fierce competition within Real Madrid’s attack. “He isn’t lacking anything. If he were on any other team in the world, he’d play 90 minutes every match. We have so many options — Diomandé, Vini, Arda, Brahim, and soon Rodrygo too,” the Portuguese coach explained. Mourinho therefore does not see the 19-year-old’s limited starting opportunities as a reflection of his quality.
However, Diomandé still needs to take advantage of the opportunities he receives if he wants to establish himself in Mourinho’s starting XI. Real Madrid’s attacking depth leaves little room for error, with several high-level options competing for places. The Ivorian now faces the challenge of proving that his €140 million price tag deserves a regular starting role.
