Dino Toppmöller’s time at Lens has come to an unexpected end after just six matches in charge. L’Équipe first reported his dismissal, with La Voix du Nord subsequently confirming the information, although Lens had yet to make the decision official.
The German coach leaves just three days before a crucial Ligue 1 trip to Monaco, despite the club’s recent run of two defeats and one draw in the league. Yannick Cahuzac will reportedly take temporary charge, although his lack of a BEPF coaching qualification could complicate a longer-term appointment.
According to Bild, however, sporting results did not trigger Toppmöller’s departure. The situation reportedly escalated after Lens decided to sideline his assistant Nelson Morgado, who had worked alongside the German coach since 2017. Morgado had apparently clashed with members of the French coaching staff after demanding greater commitment and passion from them. His approach reportedly created tensions within the club, prompting management to remove him from the coaching setup.
Toppmöller strongly opposed the decision and reportedly viewed it as direct interference in his work. The German coach refused to accept the sidelining of his trusted assistant, creating an impasse between him and the Lens hierarchy. According to Bild, the disagreement ultimately led to Toppmöller’s dismissal, meaning his short spell at the club ended because of an internal dispute rather than the team’s recent results.
