Niger and Somalia will host their respective 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches at the Accra Sports Stadium in Ghana after selecting the venue for their upcoming home fixtures.
The decision means both nations will play their designated home matches in Accra as they continue their campaigns in the qualifiers for the 2027 AFCON tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
The Accra Sports Stadium, one of Ghana’s historic football venues, will therefore serve as a temporary home ground for Niger and Somalia during the qualifying campaign.
Playing home matches outside their own territories has become necessary for several African national teams whose stadiums do not meet the Confederation of African Football (CAF) requirements for international matches.
For Niger and Somalia, the use of the Accra venue provides an approved location where they can stage their fixtures while meeting the necessary competition and stadium standards.
The arrangement is also expected to give both teams an opportunity to benefit from a familiar West African football environment, although they will technically be playing their home matches away from their respective countries.
Niger and Somalia Begin AFCON Qualification Journey
The 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign is expected to feature intense competition as nations battle for places at the continental tournament.
Niger will be looking to secure qualification for another appearance at the AFCON finals, while Somalia will be aiming to make progress in a competition that has historically been challenging for the Ocean Stars.
With the Accra Sports Stadium confirmed as their venue, both countries will now have a clear base for their home fixtures during the qualification process.
The decision also highlights the continuing importance of CAF-approved stadiums across Africa, with countries without approved facilities having to adopt alternative venues in other nations.

Its selection by Niger and Somalia adds to the stadium’s role as a venue for international competitions involving teams from outside Ghana.
The 2027 AFCON will be the first edition of the tournament to be hosted jointly by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, with the qualification process determining the teams that will join the hosts at the finals.
