Chelsea ownership change confirmed as Clearlake takes full control
Chelsea Football Club has announced a major change to its ownership structure, with affiliates of Clearlake Capital Group set to acquire the ownership interests held by Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, giving the investment firm full control of the Premier League club.
The announcement, made on September 17, 2026, also confirms that Swiss businessman Hansjörg Wyss will remain an important stakeholder and partner within the ownership group.
The transaction brings an end to Boehly’s tenure as Chelsea chairman and marks a new phase in the ownership model that began in 2022.
Boehly and Clearlake’s Chelsea journey
Boehly and Clearlake joined forces in 2022 to lead the consortium that acquired Chelsea following the end of Roman Abramovich’s ownership.
The original ownership group also included Mark Walter and Hansjörg Wyss.
The takeover was completed in May 2022 after receiving the necessary regulatory approvals, with the consortium committing significant additional investment in the club.
During the four years since the takeover, Chelsea says the ownership group has invested substantially across several areas of the club.
Those investments have included the men’s, women’s and youth teams, the club’s Cobham training centre, medical and player-support facilities, Academy development and pathways, as well as sporting and business operations.
Clearlake has been Chelsea’s majority owner since 2022, but the latest transaction will give the investment firm complete control after it acquires the interests of both Boehly and Walter.
Boehly steps down as Chelsea chairman
As part of the ownership transition, Todd Boehly will leave his position as chairman of Chelsea.
In his farewell statement, Boehly described his time at Chelsea as an honour and thanked the Premier League, coaches, players, staff and supporters for their contributions during his tenure.
He also expressed confidence that Chelsea is positioned for continued development under Clearlake’s leadership.
Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano also paid tribute to Boehly, describing him as an important partner during their ownership of the club and thanking him for his contribution as chairman.
The pair said Clearlake’s focus would remain on investment in Chelsea’s infrastructure, sporting performance, player development and long-term development of the club.
No immediate changes to Chelsea operations
Despite the major change at ownership level, Chelsea says supporters should not expect immediate disruption to the club’s daily activities.
According to the official announcement, there will be no changes to Chelsea’s day-to-day operations, leadership or strategy as a result of the transaction.
That means the club’s existing sporting and business structures are expected to continue while Clearlake assumes full control.
The investment group has indicated that it intends to maintain the strategic direction established during the joint ownership period, with continued emphasis on infrastructure, player development and sporting performance.
