World Cup 2026 : Tuchel admits his tactical mistake

Thomas Tuchel has opened up about England’s painful 2026 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, admitting that his decision to switch to a more defensive system came too early. England led 1-0 until the 85th minute before Argentina turned the match around and secured a 2-1 victory.

Speaking in a documentary about the Three Lions’ campaign, Tuchel defended his reasoning but acknowledged the timing of his tactical change. “You can try to kill me here. But it’s my scar, not yours,” he said, making clear how deeply the defeat still affects him.

Tuchel explained that England struggled to maintain possession and defend effectively as Argentina increased the pressure. After Anthony Gordon gave England the lead in the 55th minute, Tuchel replaced him with defender Ezri Konsa during the second-half cooling break. He then switched England to a 5-3-2 before moving to a 5-4-1. “We had conceded a huge chance just before the cooling break,” he recalled. “And I thought to myself: ‘We aren’t going to make it. This is the end. We don’t have possession, we aren’t defending well; we aren’t defending correctly in a 4-4-2. We need help.’”

The England manager still believes the circumstances justified his decision, particularly with his players showing signs of fatigue and Argentina throwing more attacking players onto the pitch. However, he now accepts that he changed his mindset too soon. “Of course, we could have made attacking substitutions. No one knows what would have happened,” Tuchel said. “It was too soon. Too soon for that mindset.” He also rejected the idea that ego influenced his choices, insisting that he simply tried to find a solution as Argentina intensified the pressure.
