Former France youth international goalkeeper Zacharie Boucher, 34, has now accepted a call-up to represent the Madagascar national team, marking a significant change in his international career.
Boucher represented France at several youth levels, progressing from the Under 16s through to the Under 21s. Despite his eligibility to represent Madagascar, the goalkeeper previously turned down an approach from the island nation in 2018.
At the time, Boucher told L’Équipe that his international preference was firmly with France, stating that he was proud to be French and wanted to represent the French national team. He also made clear that he had no intention of playing in the Africa Cup of Nations with another country.
Eight years later, however, the goalkeeper has changed his position and accepted the opportunity to represent Madagascar at senior international level.
Boucher’s decision adds experience to the Madagascar squad as the country continues to build its international football programme. His previous experience with France’s youth teams could also provide valuable insight as he begins a new chapter with the Malagasy national team.
