Al-Ittihad striker George Ilenikhena says he is eager to make his Super Eagles debut after receiving his first call-up to Nigeria’s senior national team.
The 20-year-old forward was invited by head coach Éric Chelle for Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
Ilenikhena is now hoping to mark his first appearance for the three-time African champions when Nigeria take on Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday.
Speaking during a media session in Uyo, the striker described his invitation to the Super Eagles as a significant moment in his young career.
“It is an honour to be here. I am proud and happy to be part of this big national team, and for me, it’s a big deal,” Ilenikhena said.
The former Monaco forward also acknowledged the quality and experience within the Nigerian squad, saying he was delighted to have the opportunity to train alongside established Super Eagles stars.
“I am just 20 years old, and I am here with big and already accomplished players,” he added.
Despite being a newcomer to the senior team, Ilenikhena said he has quickly settled into the squad and praised the atmosphere among the players.
According to him, the unity within the camp has helped him feel comfortable since his arrival.
“The team spirit is very good. I just arrived yesterday (Tuesday), and I can see that everyone is together like a big family, and that’s very good.”
Ilenikhena Ready for Super Eagles Opportunity
With Nigeria preparing for their opening AFCON 2027 qualifier against Madagascar, Ilenikhena is hoping to get the chance to show what he can offer.
The Al-Ittihad attacker promised to give his maximum effort if Chelle hands him his international debut.
“I am very excited. I will give my best, like always. I will give my best when the coach puts me on the pitch and help the team in the best way I can,” he said.
Nigeria will be looking to start their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign with a victory in Uyo before facing Guinea-Bissau in their next fixture.
For Ilenikhena, Friday’s encounter could provide the first opportunity to begin his Super Eagles career on the international stage.
“We are ready and excited to play this first game, and we are preparing in the best way to win on Friday,” he concluded.
