Black Stars Drop to 70th in Latest FIFA Rankings

Ghana’s Black Stars have dropped five places to 70th in the latest FIFA World Rankings, falling further outside Africa’s top 10 following a difficult September international window.

The rankings, released by FIFA on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, place Ghana 14th among African nations, with the Black Stars losing 25.73 ranking points from their previous position of 65th.

Ghana’s decline comes after a disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The Black Stars suffered a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké before falling to a 4-2 home defeat against The Gambia, leaving them without a point from their opening two Group C matches.

The latest ranking was calculated from 338 men’s international matches played since the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including matches from the AFCON qualifiers and UEFA and Concacaf Nations League competitions.

At the top of the African rankings, Morocco remain Africa’s highest-ranked side despite slipping to seventh globally. Senegal are second in Africa and 18th worldwide, followed by Egypt (25th), Algeria (28th) and Côte d’Ivoire (29th).

Nigeria are sixth in Africa at 30th globally, while DR Congo, Cameroon, Mali and South Africa complete the continent’s top 10.

Ghana sit behind Cape Verde (68th), Burkina Faso (62nd) and Tunisia (61st), highlighting the Black Stars’ continued slide in the continental standings.

With Ghana set to resume their AFCON qualifying campaign in November against Somalia, the Black Stars will be looking to reverse their recent fortunes and climb back up the FIFA rankings.
