The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology will be used from the group stage of this season’s CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.
The decision marks a significant step in CAF’s efforts to improve officiating standards and promote fairness in its two premier men’s club competitions.
The introduction of VAR from the group stage means participating clubs will have the technology available to support referees in reviewing key match incidents, including goals, penalty decisions, direct red cards and cases of mistaken identity.
Previously, the use of VAR in CAF competitions has varied by tournament stage and match, making its availability at the group stage an important development for participating teams.
The move is expected to help officials make more accurate decisions during crucial matches as Africa’s leading clubs compete for continental honours.
The CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup remain the continent’s two major interclub competitions, bringing together top teams from across Africa.
