Daniel Afriyie Barnieh Scores Brace as FC Aarau Stun FC Zürich to Reach Swiss Cup Last 16

Ghanaian forward Daniel Afriyie Barnieh delivered a match-winning performance against his former club, scoring twice to inspire FC Aarau to a memorable 2–0 victory over FC Zürich and secure qualification for the Round of 16 of the Swiss Cup.

Barnieh proved the difference between the two sides, punishing the top-flight visitors with a clinical second-half display to send Aarau through at the expense of their more fancied opponents.

After a tightly contested first half ended without a goal, the 25-year-old Black Stars attacker broke the deadlock in the 65th minute, capitalising on a corner kick to put the home side ahead.

FC Zürich responded by pushing for an equaliser, but their hopes of forcing a comeback were dealt a decisive blow when Barnieh struck again with 10 minutes remaining.

The Ghanaian forward produced a superb long-range effort that beat the Zürich goalkeeper, completing his brace and sparking celebrations among the home supporters.

The two goals ensured FC Aarau eliminated top-flight opposition and booked their place in the last 16 of the competition.

The victory carried added significance for Barnieh, who spent two and a half years with FC Zürich before moving to FC Aarau.

Facing his former employers, the Ghanaian forward produced one of his most influential performances of the campaign, demonstrating his finishing ability and composure in front of goal.

His brace also provided a timely response to his search for consistent form this season, with the performance underlining his importance to Aarau’s attacking ambitions.

Barnieh’s contribution against Zürich takes his tally to three goals and two assists across competitions, according to the figures provided, strengthening his growing influence as the Swiss Cup campaign progresses.

For Barnieh, the performance could prove an important turning point in his campaign. His ability to deliver against familiar opposition, particularly in a high-stakes knockout fixture, will boost his confidence heading into subsequent matches.

With a place in the Round of 16 secured, Aarau will now turn their attention to the next stage of the competition, buoyed by a performance in which their Ghanaian forward took centre stage.

For FC Zürich, meanwhile, Barnieh’s double proved a painful reminder of the attacking quality they once had on their books.
