Bukayo Saka Wins Socrates Award for Life-Changing Humanitarian Work Across Africa

Arsenal and England star Bukayo Saka has been honoured with the 2026 Socrates Award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, recognising his outstanding humanitarian work and efforts to improve the lives of vulnerable children across Africa and beyond.

The 25-year-old received the prestigious award on Monday, October 26, for his partnership with BigShoe, a charitable organisation that works to provide essential medical treatment and humanitarian assistance to children from disadvantaged communities. The honour recognises footballers who use their influence and resources to make a meaningful difference in society.

Through his collaboration with BigShoe, Saka has helped fund life-changing medical procedures for children who would otherwise struggle to access essential healthcare. In 2022, the Arsenal forward supported surgeries for 120 children in Kano, Nigeria, while subsequent initiatives extended assistance to children in Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania.

One of the most moving moments of the ceremony came when Saka shared the story of Biringiro, a 14-year-old boy from Rwanda whose eyesight had deteriorated to the point where he struggled to read the blackboard at school and play with his friends. With support from BigShoe, the youngster received the eye care he needed, restoring his ability to read and giving him renewed hope for the future.

Saka has consistently emphasised the importance of using his platform as a professional footballer to support those in need. Reflecting on the significance of his charitable work, he said: “These kinds of things mean more than anything else in the world.”

The England international’s recognition highlights a growing appreciation for footballers whose contributions extend beyond the pitch. While his performances for Arsenal and England have established him as one of the leading talents in the game, his humanitarian initiatives demonstrate a commitment to helping children access healthcare and opportunities that might otherwise remain beyond their reach.

The Socrates Award, introduced in 2022 and named after the late Brazilian football legend, celebrates footballers who make exceptional contributions to humanitarian causes. Previous recipients include Senegalese forward Sadio Mané and Brazilian star Vinícius Júnior.

For Saka, the award represents more than individual recognition. It shines a spotlight on the children and families whose lives have been transformed through access to medical care, reinforcing the power of football to inspire positive change far beyond the stadium.
