Flamingos Beat Mexico 2-1 to Reach 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Quarter-Finals

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Mexico 2-1 in a thrilling Round of 16 encounter.

The Nigerian youngsters produced a determined performance to overcome their Mexican counterparts, with goals from Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Akpan Dunstan securing victory and keeping the team’s hopes of winning the tournament alive.

The result also sets up a quarter-final clash against Venezuela as the Flamingos continue their quest for a place in the semi-finals.

The Flamingos took control of the contest in the 40th minute when Oluebube Umejiaku found the back of the net to put Nigeria ahead.

Her goal gave the Nigerian side a deserved 1-0 advantage at half-time, providing a solid foundation for the second half.

Mexico returned from the break determined to fight their way back into the game, but Nigeria remained organised and continued to search for opportunities to extend their lead.

Nigeria strengthened its position in the 72nd minute when Mary Akpan Dunstan scored the second goal, giving the Flamingos a comfortable 2-0 cushion.

The goal appeared to put the West Africans firmly on course for victory, but Mexico refused to surrender without a fight.

Emily Delgado pulled one goal back for Mexico deep into stoppage time, scoring in the 90+10th minute to create a tense finish.

However, the Flamingos held their ground during the closing moments to protect their advantage and secure a 2-1 victory.

The victory represents another important step for Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, with the team demonstrating resilience and determination against a Mexican side that pushed hard until the final whistle.

Head coach Akeem Busari and his technical crew will now turn their attention to the quarter-finals as Nigeria prepares to face Venezuela.

The encounter is scheduled for November 1, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. Nigerian time at Pitch 4 of the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé, Morocco.

With a semi-final place at stake, the Flamingos will aim to build on their performance against Mexico and continue Nigeria’s campaign in the competition.

The team’s ability to manage pressure in the closing stages against Mexico could prove valuable as the tournament enters its decisive phase.

For Nigeria, the immediate objective is clear: overcome Venezuela and move one step closer to the ultimate prize.
