La Liga Santander Spanish Clubs To Raise Funds To Assist Flood Victims

LaLiga and its clubs will promote a campaign during this weekend’s match broadcasts and on their social media accounts in order to assist raise money for the Red Cross to aid those impacted by the flash floods that have killed at least 158 people in Spain.

Additionally, Real Madrid declared that they will work with the Red Cross and contribute one million euros ($1.09 million).

Spain’s professional football joins the condolences and expresses its solidarity with the families of the victims and the missing,” LaLiga said in a statement on Thursday.

“The Real Madrid Foundation and the Red Cross have today launched a fundraising campaign to support those affected by the storm and the club have decide to support this campaign with a donation of one million euros to help the many families who are in a critical situation and need all our help and solidarity,” the Spanish champions said in a statement.

The Spanish FA urged competition organisers to observe a minute of silence before games that would be played as an homage to the deaths after postponing seven midweek Cup matches and all games scheduled for Valencia’s eastern region this weekend.

The lone Copa del Rey encounter without a new fixture date is Real Sociedad’s meeting against Jove Espanyol in Alicante, while six postponed games have been moved to next week.

Before next Tuesday, LaLiga requested that the ten impacted clubs in the top two divisions submit a proposal for new dates.

Valencia’s La Liga match against the visitors on Saturday Among the games postponed are Real Madrid and Villarreal’s matchup with Rayo Vallecano.

Valencia designated the Mestalla stadium a drop-off location for contributions of food and essential items.
