FIFA finds itself at the center of a controversy after agreeing to pay its president, Gianni Infantino’s, income tax totaling 3.57 million euros between 2024 and 2026.
According to reports by leading media outlets such as The New York Times and Le Monde, this financial benefit followed the executive’s move from Switzerland to Miami.
Although the international federation states in a press release that all internal regulations and applicable laws were followed, the agreement has been heavily criticized.
Documents reviewed by The New York Times reveal that this preferential treatment was agreed upon during a closed-door meeting and never appeared in any of the organization’s official documents.
The matter is particularly sensitive since the initiative reportedly came from Bruno Chiomento, a Swiss lawyer who has been close to Gianni Infantino for two decades.
Moreover, this scandal has erupted during a crucial election cycle, as the deadline for submitting candidacies for the FIFA presidency is set for November 19 of this year.
