La Liga champions Real Madrid were upset 2-1 at home by Valencia on Saturday, while rivals Barcelona had the opportunity to increase their lead on top of the La Liga rankings after Vinicius Jr. missed his second penalty in less than a month.

Hansi Flick’s Barcelona leads the league with 66th points with one game remaining, three points ahead of Real Madrid in second place, and nine points ahead of third-place Atletico.

With eight games remaining, Barca will increase their advantage to six points if they defeat Betis later on Saturday.

Real Madrid controlled the ball most of the time, but they squandered too many opportunities.

Valencia’s goalie, Giorgi Mamardashvili, had an outstanding game in goal, including stopping Vinicius’ penalty in the first half.

Valencia’s defender Mouctar Diakhaby headed home a corner kick from Andre Almeida to give the team the lead.

Vinicius battled for the game-winning goal in the second half and scored the equaliser from a corner in the 50th minute.

Five minutes into extra time, Valencia managed to hold on and capitalise on a swift counter, and Hugo Duro’s header sealed the victory.
