World Cup 2026 : UN criticizes US immigration policy

Tensions continue to rise just hours before the start of the World Cup 2026. The United Nations has now openly criticized the United States over its immigration measures surrounding the tournament. Several delegations, supporters, and officials have already faced strict controls, visa complications, and administrative restrictions since arriving on American soil.

Speaking during a press conference in Geneva, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk strongly condemned the situation. “I sincerely hope there will be a thorough reassessment of how the application of migration policies affects human rights and human dignity,” he declared. He also urged US authorities to reconsider the current measures during the competition.

Recent incidents have intensified the controversy. Iranian officials encountered major visa difficulties, several national teams underwent heavy security checks upon arrival, and Somali referee Omar Artan could not enter the United States despite FIFA selecting him for the World Cup 2026.

FIFA continues to defend its position, insisting that it “does not interfere in the immigration procedures of the host country, including the granting of visas.”
