Algeria defender Aïssa Mandi has credited Lionel Messi as the decisive factor behind his side’s defeat to Argentina, describing the Argentine captain as possibly the greatest player in football history.
Speaking after Algeria’s loss, Mandi acknowledged that his team’s preparations had centered on limiting Messi’s influence, but admitted the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner ultimately proved unstoppable.
“What made the difference is that they have a ruthless player; almost every chance he gets ends up in the back of the net,” Mandi said.
The experienced centre-back was full of praise for Messi’s clinical finishing and ability to punish opponents whenever opportunities arise.
“He might be the best player of all time. His efficiency is immense; we knew that.”
Despite Algeria’s efforts to contain Argentina’s talisman throughout the contest, Mandi conceded that the North Africans were unable to find an answer to Messi’s brilliance.
“We tried to stop him as much as possible, but we didn’t succeed, he was simply much better than us,” he added.
Messi’s outstanding display, highlighted by a hat-trick, ensured Argentina secured a comfortable victory and underlined why he remains one of the most feared players on the international stage. For Algeria, the defeat serves as a setback in their World Cup campaign, but Mandi’s comments reflected both the disappointment of the result and the respect earned by a player widely regarded as one of football’s all-time greats.
