Hakimi Faces Legal Crossroads as Morocco Sets Sights on Greater World Cup Ambitions

As Morocco looks to do great in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with renewed ambition, one of its most influential figures, Achraf Hakimi, finds himself at the center of a storm unfolding far beyond the football pitch.

The Moroccan international, a key pillar in the Atlas Lions’ golden generation, had earlier signaled confidence and determination in a post on X, reflecting a team eager to build on its historic semi-final finish in 2022. Yet, on Friday, June 19, events off the field took a decisive turn.

A ruling by the investigating chamber of the Versailles Court of Appeal confirmed that Hakimi will stand trial following allegations stemming from an incident in February 2023. The court upheld an earlier decision by an investigating judge, rejecting the player’s appeal and paving the way for formal proceedings.

The case dates back to February 25, 2023, when a 24-year-old woman reported to police in Nogent-sur-Marne that she had been raped at Hakimi’s residence. Although the complainant did not file formal charges, authorities proceeded with an investigation, later transferring the case to the Nanterre public prosecutor’s office.

According to details from the investigation, Hakimi and the complainant had first connected via Instagram weeks earlier. Reports indicate that the player had suggested meeting in public settings with friends present, proposals the woman declined before eventually agreeing to visit his home. The meeting, initially described as a chance to “relax,” preceded the alleged incident.

Hakimi, who has consistently denied wrongdoing, has now publicly expressed his determination to clear his name in court.

“Justice looked me in the eyes and said to me: ‘If you weren’t famous, there never would have been a case,’” he stated. “I chose to remain silent for years. I thought that staying dignified, being patient, and trusting the justice system would allow the right decisions to be made.”

He continued: “Today, a story that is not mine is being told at the expense of my family, my life, and above all, the truth. Sometimes I feel like I’ve become an easy target. I’ve been waiting for this trial since day one. And now I’m looking forward to it. Finally, I will be able to speak.”

The development introduces uncertainty around one of Morocco’s most prominent players at a time when the national team is aiming to push even further on the global stage. Hakimi’s role, both as a leader and as one of the squad’s standout performers, remains crucial to their aspirations.

As the legal process unfolds, the focus will inevitably be split between footballing ambition and judicial scrutiny, with the outcome likely to carry significant implications both for the player and for Morocco’s World Cup journey.
