Already eliminated before kick-off, the Turks produced a spirited performance to secure their first victory of the tournament, while the United States finished top of the group despite the defeat.
The United States made a perfect start when Auston Trusty opened the scoring in the third minute from a Sebastian Berhalter assist. In the middle of this exciting encounter, Burak Alper Yılmaz completed the comeback by scoring Turkey’s second goal in the 31st minute, giving his side a 2-1 lead at halftime. Berhalter restored parity for the Americans in the 49th minute, setting up a tense finish between the two teams.
Turkey continued to push for a winning goal and earned its reward deep into stoppage time when Kaan Ayhan found the net in the 98th minute to seal a dramatic 3-2 victory.
Although the result was not enough to keep Turkey in the tournament, Vincenzo Montella’s side left the competition with pride after a determined display. The United States finished first in Group D with six points, ahead of Australia and Paraguay on four points each, while Turkey concluded its 2026 FIFA World Cup journey in fourth place with three points.
