2026 FIFA World Cup: DR Congo beat Uzbekistan, reach Round of 32

The Democratic Republic of Congo produced a stunning comeback to defeat Uzbekistan 3-1 and secure a historic place in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Leopards endured a frustrating first half after conceding the opening goal in the 10th minute and seeing Nathanaël Mbuku’s equalizer ruled out seven minutes later for a foul in the build-up. Despite dominating possession and creating the better chances through the lively Brian Cipenga and Yoane Wissa, Sébastien Desabre’s men went into the break trailing 1-0.

DR Congo returned with greater intensity after halftime and quickly increased the pressure on the Uzbek defense. Cipenga continued to create opportunities, but Wissa first missed a clear chance before heading another effort wide. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 67th minute when the Leopards earned a penalty after sustained pressure. Wissa stepped up and confidently converted from the spot one minute later to level the score. Desabre then changed the game with inspired substitutions, introducing Fiston Mayele before sending on Meschack Elia, Théo Bongonda and Ngal’ayel Mukau. The move paid off instantly as Elia delivered a perfect cross for Mayele, who fired DR Congo into the lead in the 78th minute.

The Leopards never looked back after taking the advantage. They controlled the closing stages with authority, limited Uzbekistan to very few attacking opportunities and continued to threaten on the counterattack. Their dominance reflected in the statistics, with thirteen shots against only three for Uzbekistan. Deep into stoppage time, Wissa completed his brace to seal an emphatic 3-1 victory and spark celebrations across the nation. The result gave DR Congo its first-ever FIFA World Cup victory and secured qualification for the Round of 32 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams. The Leopards will now face England on July 1 in a highly anticipated knockout clash.
