Lionel Messi has written another chapter in World Cup history after becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive FIFA World Cup matches.
The Argentina captain reached the milestone during his side’s 3-1 victory over Jordan in Dallas, coming off the bench to score a stunning free-kick in the 80th minute.
His precise strike from around 25 metres sealed the win and further cemented his place among football’s all-time greats.
Messi’s remarkable scoring streak began at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he found the net against Australia in the Round of 16.
He followed that with goals against the Netherlands and Croatia before scoring twice in Argentina’s dramatic final victory over France to help secure the world title.
The 39-year-old has carried that form into the 2026 tournament.
He opened his campaign with a hat-trick against Algeria before adding two more goals in Argentina’s victory over Austria.
His strike against Jordan took his tally to six goals in the current tournament and extended his overall World Cup goal record to 19.
With the latest achievement, Messi surpasses the previous record of six consecutive World Cup scoring matches, jointly held by France’s Just Fontaine, who achieved the feat in 1958, and Brazil’s Jairzinho, who matched it during the 1970 tournament.
The latest milestone adds to an extraordinary World Cup legacy as Argentina prepare for the knockout stages with their captain continuing to deliver on the biggest stage.
