Portugal have named veteran manager Jorge Jesus as the new head coach of the national team, replacing Roberto Martinez, who departed after the country’s disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed the appointment on Friday, just days after Martinez left his position.
His departure came after Portugal suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16, ending their World Cup campaign. Martinez later explained that his contract had expired following the tournament.

At 71, Jesus brings decades of coaching experience to the national team. He has enjoyed a distinguished managerial career, particularly in Portugal, where he achieved success with both Benfica and Sporting CP.
Before taking charge of Portugal, Jesus managed Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr, guiding the club to the 2025/26 Saudi Pro League title.
During that successful campaign, Cristiano Ronaldo flourished under his leadership, scoring 29 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions.
Jesus now faces the task of rebuilding Portugal as they prepare for future international competitions.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup was the final World Cup of his career.
However, the 41-year-old has yet to announce whether he will retire from international football, leaving the door open for a possible return to the national team.
