South Africa are set to bring back Pitso Mosimane as head coach, with the experienced tactician lined up to replace Belgian coach Hugo Broos.
South African Football Association President Danny Jordaan confirmed that Mosimane is the preferred candidate, although some final details are still being resolved.
Jordaan said the federation expects to formally announce the new coach next week.
Mosimane, 62, previously managed Bafana Bafana from 2010 to 2012 after serving as an assistant to Brazil’s Carlos Alberto Parreira during the 2010 World Cup campaign.
His first spell ended following a poor start to the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
He also faced criticism after South Africa missed out on the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations due to a misunderstanding of the competition’s qualification rules.
Mosimane later rebuilt his reputation at club level, guiding Mamelodi Sundowns to the CAF Champions League title in 2016.
He subsequently took charge of Egyptian giants Al Ahly, leading them to three consecutive Champions League finals and winning the competition in 2020 and 2021.
He has also managed clubs in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Iran.
Broos, 74, recently stepped down after South Africa’s World Cup campaign ended with a defeat to co-hosts Canada in the last 32.
If appointed, Mosimane’s second spell will begin with 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Guinea at home and Eritrea away next month.
