Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz addressed the media ahead of Ghana’s crucial opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Côte d’Ivoire.
Facing the West African rivals at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké, the veteran tactician delivered a clear message of focus and high expectations.
Queiroz emphasized that the team’s immediate priority must be securing their place at the main tournament.
“We are here to play to win one specific competition, and all national teams in this moment have one specific competition called qualification,” Queiroz stated.
“That’s the first cup that you have to win.”
Despite early obstacles—including the loss of key players such as captain Jordan Ayew and Antoine Semenyo due to late injuries—the Ghana boss expressed full confidence in the squad assembled for the campaign.
He promised fans an entertaining contest between two established giants of African football.
“We are here to play a good match against a great team, great players, good coaches,” Queiroz said. “What I can say is, I think the fans will enjoy the game tomorrow because we have also great players, great staff in our team, great potential. This is what is good in football, that the fans will have the opportunity to enjoy a great match tomorrow.”
Ghana kicks off their Group C qualifying campaign against the Ivorians on Thursday, September 24, at 7:00 PM GMT.
