Brazil: Neymar announces international retirement

Neymar has officially retired from international football following Brazil’s elimination against Norway. The 34-year-old forward confirmed after the match that the 2026 FIFA World Cup marked his final appearance for the Seleção, bringing an end to one of the most remarkable careers in Brazilian football history.

Speaking to Globo after the final whistle, Neymar reflected on his journey with emotion. “I tried, I tried. Now it’s over. I started here, I finished here,” he said, referring to MetLife Stadium, where he made his Brazil debut in a friendly against the United States in 2010 and where he played his final match for the national team.

Neymar leaves Brazil as the country’s all-time leading scorer with 80 goals in 130 appearances, surpassing Pelé’s record. During his international career, he also won the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, although the FIFA World Cup title ultimately eluded him.
