CAFCL: Wiliete Promise Strong Challenge as Sundowns Visit Angola for Clash

Angolan side Wiliete Sport Clube de Benguela have outlined their ambition to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns when the two teams meet in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie on Sunday, October 18, 2026.

The Girabola pacesetters are preparing for a major continental test against the South African giants, who boast considerable experience in African football and remain among the leading contenders for the competition. The match presents Wiliete with an opportunity to measure their progress against one of the continent’s established powerhouses.

Wiliete will look to their attacking options, including Angolan internationals Gilberto and Mabululu, to provide the firepower needed to trouble Sundowns. The visitors, meanwhile, are expected to rely on the experience of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and midfielder Teboho Mokoena as they seek a positive result away from home.

Ahead of the encounter, Wiliete have expressed their determination to establish themselves among Africa’s elite clubs, declaring: “One nation that believes in greatness. One mission: to prove that we belong among Africa’s best.” The statement reflects the club’s ambition as they prepare for one of their biggest continental challenges.

The first leg will be played at the 20,000 capacity Tundavala National Stadium in Lubango, Huíla Province, a venue that hosted matches during the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations. The stadium is also the home ground of Clube Desportivo da Huíla, with Wiliete moving the fixture away from their usual base in Benguela for the high-profile encounter.

Interest in the match has been strong, with Wiliete confirming that tickets for the open terraces have sold out. According to the club’s ticketing update, advance tickets were priced at 3,000 Angolan kwanzas, while matchday tickets cost 5,000 kwanzas. The game is scheduled to kick off at 4pm Angolan time.

Wiliete arrive at the contest after eliminating Seychelles’ Foresters FC 5-0 on aggregate in the first preliminary round, underlining their attacking threat ahead of the meeting with the reigning champions.

Their reported eight match unbeaten run across all competitions will provide further encouragement as they seek to make home advantage count.

Sundowns, however, will be determined to begin their title defence on a positive note. The South African outfit received a bye into the second preliminary round after winning the previous edition of the competition and will be eager to demonstrate their continental pedigree against the Angolan challengers.

The return leg is scheduled for October 23 in Pretoria, where Sundowns will host Wiliete at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. The two matches will determine which side advances to the group stage, with Wiliete hoping to secure a valuable first leg advantage before travelling to South Africa for the decisive encounter.
