Former Senegal international El Hadji Diouf has been handed a one-year suspended sentence by the Dakar District Court after being found guilty of failing to meet his child support obligations.
The court also ordered the ex-forward to pay 10 million FCFA, approximately $16,500, in damages following the case brought against him by his former partner, Valérie Émilie Joséphine Leres Bishop. The ruling comes after it was established that Diouf had accumulated millions in unpaid support intended for their daughter, K.D. Diouf.
The judgment marks a significant legal development for the former Liverpool and Bolton Wanderers player, once celebrated as one of Senegal’s most prominent football figures. While the sentence is suspended, meaning he will avoid prison unless he reoffends, the financial penalty underscores the seriousness of the case.
Diouf, who played a key role in Senegal’s historic run to the quarter-finals of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, has faced controversies both during and after his playing career. This latest ruling adds to a list of off-field issues that have often overshadowed his footballing achievements.
The case has drawn attention in Senegal, highlighting broader discussions around parental responsibility and legal enforcement of child support obligations.
