Former African Footballer of the Year Emmanuel Adebayor has opened up about his decisive role in guiding Senaya’s international football career, revealing that he personally advised the player to choose the Black Stars of Ghana over Togo.
The Togolese football legend explained that his own personal experience with the World Cup played a central factor in the advice he gave. Reflecting on the rarity of performing on football’s biggest stage, Adebayor emphasized how crucial it is for players to seize the opportunity when it arises.
“I was the one that made the decision for him, actually,” Adebayor shared. “I told him, ‘My friend, there is no other choice.’ Even with everything I have done or achieved in football, I had the chance to play only once in the World Cup.”
Adebayor, who led Togo to their historic single FIFA World Cup appearance in 2006, urged Senaya to treat the global tournament with the utmost urgency and dedication.
“I told him, ‘My friend, this is your first World Cup, maybe this will be the last one, you never know, but make sure you give everything,'” Adebayor recalled.
Reflecting on the player’s performance during the tournament, the former Arsenal and Real Madrid striker expressed pride in how things ultimately unfolded.
“The World Cup, we all saw what happened,” Adebayor added. “He tried his best, and I think Ghanaians were proud of him.”
Adebayor’s intervention highlights the profound influence veteran African stars continue to wield over the next generation, bridging national rivalries to help young talents achieve success on the world stage.
