FIFA WORLD CUP: Jerome Boateng Slams Bafana Bafana Defensive Approach and Mistakes

Former Germany international Jerome Boateng has delivered a strongly worded assessment of South Africa’s World Cup performance, expressing disappointment with what he described as a lack of spirit and repeated errors in their display.

Speaking after the match, Boateng—who has African heritage—said he expected a more committed and disciplined showing from South Africa national football team, but instead witnessed what he termed “naive mistakes” that proved costly at this level.

“I have African roots and I was very disappointed by the performance of South Africa” Boateng said. “We didn’t see a soul or performance that honors the African continent. Today, we only saw so many naive mistakes.”

Boateng went further in his assessment, suggesting that the tactical approach contributed to the team’s struggles. He criticised the setup as overly defensive and argued that the coaching decisions did not bring out the best in the squad.

He added that responsibility ultimately lies with the technical leadership, stating that the team’s structure and selection left them exposed in key moments of the game.

“The blame should go to the coach for being very defensive with the terrible lineup,” he said. “We have the right to be angry with him.”

The remarks have sparked discussion around South Africa’s performance, particularly in relation to their game management and decision-making under pressure at World Cup level.

Despite the criticism, Bafana Bafana are expected to regroup quickly as they prepare for their remaining group-stage fixtures, where they will be aiming to respond on the pitch and revive their campaign.
