Fugu Rivalry Reignited as Zambia, Ghana Meet in Semis

Zambia Under-15 girls will face defending champions Ghana in a highly anticipated girls’ semi-final at Ngoni Stadium in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Ghana’s Under-15 side, the Black Damsels, are determined to retain the title they won in the previous edition. Drawn in Group B, Ghana have once again demonstrated their pedigree.

Zambia, however, has been equally impressive storming into the semi-finals with a perfect record after victories over Morocco, Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Zambian Under-15 girls have been one of the standout teams of the tournament and their clash with Ghana promises fireworks. Despite Ghana’s dominance in the competition’s history, Zambia head into the tie unfazed and full of belief.

Zambia will once again look to their in-form striker, Phidah Muzuwa popularly known as the “Female Assassin”who currently leads the scoring charts with five goals.

The Woodlands A Secondary School and Elite Ladies FC forward is a strong contender for both the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament awards.

Hailing from Itezhi Tezhi and discovered in Ng’ombe Compound while playing for Ng’ombe Queens, Muzuwa now has the perfect stage to further announce herself on the continental scene.

She is supported by a talented cast that includes Peggy Banda, also known as “Kanono,” who found the back of the net in Zambia’s 3-1 victory over hosts Zimbabwe and remains a key attacking option.

In midfield and defence, Loveness Daka has been a revelation. Despite being a Grade 6 pupil at Woodlands A Primary School, she has adapted superbly to an unfamiliar central defensive role.

Between the posts, goalkeeper Winfridah Mutale—fondly called “Super Magnet” has been outstanding, conceding just two goals so far in the tournament. Captain Rebecca Mbutawo has also played an important role for Zambia throughout the campaign..

Interestingly, this on-pitch battle comes amid a light-hearted cultural debate between Zambia and Ghana over “Fugu”a traditional Ghanaian attire that recently sparked social media discussion in Zambia, where some referred to it as a “blouse.”

The debate gained traction following Ghanaian President John Mahama’s visit to Lusaka.
