Greek international Marios Oikonomou dies after motorcycle accident

A 33-year-old central defender who played for Cagliari, Bologna, AEK Athens, and Copenhagen, Marios Oikonomou enjoyed a respectable career, notably earning six caps for the Greek national team.

Retired since 2024 after a stint with Panetolikos, he tragically died following a motorcycle accident on Saturday, May 23.

Numerous Greek media outlets reported the sad news. He collided with a car attempting a U-turn, suffered a head injury, and was in critical condition for several days at the hospital in Ioannina. However, irreversible brain damage ultimately led to his death.
