Lionel Messi becomes owner of a Spanish second-division club

Lionel Messi has expanded his football investments by acquiring Club Deportivo Eldense, a Spanish second-division club currently 19th in LaLiga 2.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has officially taken ownership of the club, which sees his arrival as the start of a new chapter in its century-long history.

CD Eldense announced the transaction in an official statement, describing Messi’s arrival as the beginning of a long-term project focused on the club’s sporting, institutional and social development. However, the deal still requires mandatory approval from Spain’s Higher Sports Council under the country’s Sports Law.

Messi already has several links to football ownership. He co-owns Inter Miami, where he has played since July 2023, and took full ownership of UE Cornellà, a club based in the Barcelona area, in April. His acquisition of Eldense now adds another Spanish club to his growing football portfolio.
