Real Madrid’s 2–1 derby defeat to Atlético has revived the debate around Vinicius Jr.’s place in José Mourinho’s starting XI. The Brazilian struggled again on Sunday, while Yan Diomandé brought more energy after replacing him early in the second half. The Ivorian’s impact has now raised questions about the competition for places in Madrid’s attack.
Vinicius has struggled to reach his usual level since the start of the season. His shooting accuracy, big-chance conversion and dribbling numbers currently sit among the lowest marks of his career. Against Atlético, he failed to make a major impact in the first half. After Dean Huijsen’s red card, Mourinho reacted quickly and replaced Vinicius with Diomandé and Antonio Rüdiger.
The 19-year-old Ivorian continues to make a strong impression despite his limited experience at Real Madrid. The club signed him from RB Leipzig for €125 million, with another €15 million in potential bonuses, making him the most expensive player in Madrid’s history.
Against Atlético, Diomandé completed seven dribbles and recorded 19 touches in the final third. He also forced Jan Oblak into a save. His pace, directness and ability to beat defenders now give Mourinho another attacking option alongside Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and Arda Güler. For now, however, Diomandé still needs more time before he can challenge Vinicius for a permanent starting role.
