The National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have taken another significant step in preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) by inaugurating a seven-member Welfare Committee to oversee the well-being of the Super Falcons throughout the tournament in Morocco.
The committee was constituted after a high-level meeting between the Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, and the General Secretary of the NFF, Mohammed Sanusi, held in Abuja on Wednesday.
Aisha Falode has been appointed as chairperson of the committee, while Ruth David will serve as secretary. Other members include Margaret Icheen, Babagana Kalli, Emeka Iyama, Aderonke Tinuoye and Tobechukwu Oluchi.
The initiative reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to creating a stable and supportive environment for the nine-time African champions as they pursue another continental title.
Speaking after the meeting, Olopade emphasized that the government is determined to ensure the Super Falcons enjoy a smooth campaign in Morocco without any financial distractions or welfare-related challenges.
He noted that the objective is to allow the players and technical crew to focus entirely on their performances on the pitch.
Nigeria will compete in Group C alongside Egypt, Zambia and tournament debutants Malawi at the 2026 WAFCON, which will be staged from July 25 to August 16 in Morocco.
Beyond the battle for continental glory, the tournament carries added significance as it will serve as Africa’s qualifying competition for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The four semi-finalists will secure automatic qualification, while the fifth-best team will earn a place in the intercontinental playoffs for a final opportunity to reach the global showpiece.
With a dedicated welfare structure now in place, the Super Falcons will be aiming to defend their African crown with full administrative and logistical backing as they seek to extend their dominance on the continent.
