Orlando Pirates Draw Stellenbosch in Carling Knockout Cup Semi-Final as Buccaneers Chase Title Defence

Orlando Pirates Draw Stellenbosch in Carling Knockout Cup Semi-Final as Buccaneers Chase Title Defence

Orlando Pirates have been handed a challenging away fixture against former champions Stellenbosch FC in the semi-finals of the 2026 Carling Knockout Cup as the Buccaneers continue their quest to defend the title.

The semi-final draw follows an exciting weekend of quarter-final action that reduced the original 16-team competition to just four surviving clubs.

Interestingly, all four semi-finalists had to work hard for their places, with each team progressing by a narrow one-goal margin, underlining the competitiveness of this year’s tournament.

Orlando Pirates secured their place in the last four with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United at home.

The result ensured that the Buccaneers maintained their hopes of retaining the trophy and set up an intriguing encounter against Stellenbosch.

However, the Soweto giants will face a different challenge this time, as they prepare for their first away fixture in this season’s Carling Knockout competition.

Stellenbosch booked their semi-final ticket in dramatic fashion, defeating AmaZulu 2-1 on Sunday evening to secure a meeting with the defending champions.

Orlando Pirates Hold Cup Advantage Over Stellenbosch

The upcoming encounter will add another chapter to the growing rivalry between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC, with both clubs having previously met in several important cup competitions.

Their first-ever meeting came in the opening round of the League Cup, where a late goal from Thembinkosi Lorch handed Orlando Pirates victory and qualification for the quarter-finals.

That remains their only previous meeting in the Carling Knockout competition, while the other four cup encounters between the sides have taken place in the MTN8.

Historically, Orlando Pirates have enjoyed the advantage in cup meetings, recording four victories against Stellenbosch’s single win.

Interestingly, Stellenbosch’s only cup victory over the Buccaneers came in a two-legged MTN8 encounter during the 2023/24 campaign.

However, Pirates eventually progressed to the final on the away-goals rule after the two sides finished level on aggregate.

High Stakes as Both Teams Target Carling Knockout Final

With a place in the Carling Knockout final at stake, both teams will approach the encounter knowing that there is little room for mistakes.

Unlike their previous two-legged MTN8 meeting, the semi-final will be decided in a single knockout fixture, meaning defeat will bring an end to either side’s hopes of lifting the trophy.

For Orlando Pirates, the challenge is to overcome a difficult away assignment and move one step closer to successfully defending their Carling Knockout crown.

Stellenbosch, meanwhile, will be determined to use home advantage to eliminate the defending champions and keep their own title ambitions alive.

The date and kick-off time for the semi-final fixture are expected to be confirmed by the organisers in due course.
