Rwanda clarifies title race rules amid Sudanese clubs’ dominance

The Rwandan Football Federation has officially clarified how the end-of-season awards will work in the BK Pro League after the strong performances of Sudanese clubs this season. With Al Hilal Omdurman currently leading the standings ahead of APR, FERWAFA explained that invited foreign clubs can win the league trophy but cannot officially represent Rwanda in African competitions or receive prize money reserved for local teams.

In its statement, FERWAFA confirmed: “If a Sudanese club finishes first in the BK Pro League, it will receive the championship trophy for the 2025-2026 season. However, these invited clubs are not eligible for the prize money allocated to the top teams.”

The federation also stressed that the highest-ranked Rwandan club would still be crowned national champion and qualify for the 2026-2027 CAF Champions League.

This unusual situation has created major interest across East African football. Al Merrikh and Ahli Wad Madani also took part in the Rwandan top flight this season after Sudan’s difficult football situation. With Al Hilal sitting comfortably at the top on 70 points, APR now focuses on securing Rwanda’s official continental ticket despite trailing by 11 points in the standings.
