SLFA Concludes WAFU-A Medical Workshop in Freetown

The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), in partnership with the West Africa Football Union Zone A (WAFU-A), has wrapped up a three-day medical workshop held in Freetown.

The training brought together medical personnel and football health professionals from across WAFU-A member associations, including hosts Sierra Leone, focusing on raising medical standards and improving player care within the game.

Key areas covered during the sessions included injury prevention, emergency response on match days, anti-doping education, and modern approaches to team medical management; all geared toward improving player safety and welfare across the region.

Addressing participants at the closing ceremony, SLFA President Babadi Kamara described the workshop as a crucial step in keeping pace with the evolving demands of football, noting the indispensable role of qualified medical teams in the sport.

He also acknowledged the continued backing of WAFU-A and the Government of Sierra Leone, stressing that such collaborations are key to strengthening football structures.

Minister of Sports Madam Augusta James-Teima praised the move, reaffirming government’s support for programmes that prioritise athlete health and safety, and stressing the need for solid medical systems in the development of sports.

WAFU-A President Lamin Kabba Bajo expressed appreciation to the SLFA and the Government for hosting the workshop, underlining the importance of ongoing medical training as football continues to grow in complexity.

He reiterated WAFU-A’s commitment to supporting member associations through capacity-building programmes. The workshop concluded with the awarding of certificates to participants, followed by group photographs to mark the end of the training.
