South Africa has officially thrown its support behind Gianni Infantino ahead of the next FIFA presidential election. After a meeting of its National Executive Committee in Johannesburg, the South African Football Association confirmed that it unanimously decided to support the Swiss official’s candidacy for a new term running from 2027 to 2031.
In a letter sent to FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström, SAFA made its position crystal clear. “We wish to clarify that the South African Football Association exclusively supports Mr. Gianni Infantino for the FIFA presidency and will therefore not sign any other declaration of support for any other candidate,” the federation stated.
SAFA also praised Infantino’s leadership, adding that the NEC believes he has shown “the qualities of an exemplary president” during his time at the head of world football.
This public backing strengthens Gianni Infantino’s position as he prepares for another election campaign. The FIFA president already enjoys strong support from several federations across Africa, a continent that has become increasingly influential in international football politics over recent years. South Africa’s announcement now sends another strong signal ahead of the 2027 FIFA Congress in Morocco.
