Sporting Lagos head coach, Jeffery Buter, has been fined ₦500,000 and cautioned by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) over comments he made following the Lagos Derby against Ikorodu City.
The sanction followed an inquest conducted by the NPFL on Wednesday to examine the coach’s post-match press interview after the derby played on September 30, 2026.
During the proceedings, Buter reportedly admitted that he was wrong to make the statements, which the league considered unsubstantiated comments about the NPFL and its match officials.
The panel consequently imposed a ₦500,000 fine and warned the Sporting Lagos coach to desist from making public statements that could not be substantiated, particularly comments relating to the league and referees.
The NPFL said the relatively lenient punishment was influenced by Buter’s admission of error and his limited experience as a coach in the Nigerian top-flight league.
The development comes as Sporting Lagos continues its campaign in the 2026/27 NPFL season, with the league maintaining its position on responsible public commentary by clubs and technical officials.
