UEFA has rejected a proposal from Premier League clubs to increase squad sizes for the UEFA Champions League. English teams had pushed for an expansion from 25 to 28 players to cope with the growing demands of the competition calendar and reduce injury risks.
However, after discussions within the club competitions committee, the existing regulations were maintained, keeping the current limit unchanged.
The decision follows strong opposition from several Spanish clubs, including Atlético Madrid, Sevilla FC, and Real Sociedad, who fear that wealthier English sides would gain an even greater advantage with larger squads.
Despite this rejection, the debate is unlikely to disappear, especially as the new UEFA Champions League format continues to increase the number of matches and overall workload on players.
