Emmanuel Arnold Okwi has announced his retirement from professional football, ending a career that established him among Uganda’s finest forwards of the modern era.
A product of Jogoo Young before breaking through at SC Villa, Okwi quickly emerged as one of the brightest talents in the Uganda Premier League, earning a move to Tanzania’s Simba SC in 2009.
His career would later include spells with Étoile du Sahel in Tunisia, Young Africans and a return to Simba in Tanzania, SønderjyskE in Denmark, Al Ittihad in Libya, Al-Zawra’a and Erbil SC in Iraq, as well as Kiyovu Sports, AS Kigali and Police in Rwanda.
Okwi had three spells with both SC Villa and Simba, maintaining a close bond with two of East Africa’s most successful clubs.
On the international stage, he represented Uganda 95 times, scoring 28 goals, captaining the national team and featuring at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where he scored twice as the Cranes reached the Round of 16.
His achievements also included three Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup titles with Uganda in 2009, 2011 and 2012. In announcing his retirement, Okwi said his playing career had come to an end but expressed his desire to remain involved in football and contribute to the development of the game.
“This is not goodbye to football – it’s the beginning of a new chapter,” he wrote in a statement on Tuesday.
Okwi leaves the game with a legacy built on goals, leadership and longevity, having inspired supporters across Uganda and the region. His retirement brings the curtain down on one of the country’s most distinguished football careers.
