Despite their 3-0 loss to Cameroon in the final of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, the Malawi women’s national team was welcomed home as true champions this afternoon.
A huge crowd gathered at the airport to congratulate the players, turning the disappointment of the loss into a moment of great public enthusiasm and national pride.
This massive turnout is a testament to the historic impact of the Scorchers run throughout the competition.
In their very first appearance at this level, the Malawians defied all expectations by eliminating several of the continent’s powerhouses, driven in particular by the offensive prowess of sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga.
By reaching the final of the continental tournament, the national team not only achieved the greatest feat in the history of Malawian women’s soccer but also secured a coveted spot in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
It is therefore with their heads held high and backed by an entire nation that the players embark on this new journey toward the world stage.
