World Cup 2026 : visa fees hit African fans hard

With the FIFA World Cup 2026 fast approaching, a new measure in the United States is set to heavily impact supporters from several African nations. Under the “Visa Bond Pilot Program,” fans from Algeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, and Cape Verde will be required to pay a substantial financial bond to obtain entry visas.

The amounts range from $10,000 to $15,000 per adult and $5,000 per child, a decision justified by authorities as a way to deter illegal immigration.

This measure, which will take effect on April 2, adds a major obstacle for fans hoping to attend matches in the United States, where several African teams will play during the group stage. FIFA is currently in discussions with the administration to secure exemptions for official delegations, including players, staff, and federation representatives, though supporters and players’ families remain excluded from these negotiations.

Beyond visa costs, fans must also contend with rising expenses related to tickets and accommodation across host cities in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. This accumulation of financial barriers risks limiting African fan presence at the tournament, despite strong representation on the pitch from nations like Senegal and Ivory Coast.
