Young football talent Yan Diomande has revealed how Cristiano Ronaldo’s mentality and relentless desire to win inspired him from an early age.
Diomande says Ronaldo became an idol for him not only because of his achievements on the pitch, but also because of the Portuguese superstar’s competitive mentality.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is an idol for many reasons,” Diomande said. “To begin with, his mentality, his desire to win. I identified with that because I didn’t like to lose either; I’m a sore loser.”
The youngster recalled how strongly he reacted to defeats as a child, saying he would often cry whenever he lost a game. That competitive streak, he explained, helped him identify with Ronaldo and sparked his admiration for the five time Ballon d’Or winner.
“I cried every time I lost. So I felt a connection, and I said to myself, ‘Why not?’ I started paying attention to Ronaldo,” Diomande added.
His admiration soon extended beyond simply watching Ronaldo play. Diomande revealed that he began buying shirts associated with his idol and even went as far as writing Ronaldo’s name on them himself using paint.
“I bought shirts, and I would write his name on them myself with paint,” he said.
For Diomande, Ronaldo’s influence has remained significant as he continues to develop his own football career. The young player says the Portuguese forward’s mentality continues to serve as an inspiration.
“He influenced me and he continues to influence me,” Diomande said.
The revelation highlights the lasting impact Ronaldo has had on a new generation of footballers, with his determination, winning mentality and dedication continuing to shape aspiring stars around the world.
